Formerly called the gate of hell by the Spanish, the Masaya volcano It is a gigantic crater located a few kilometers south of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Masaya volcano is on the route that goes toPomegranate, one of the cities with Lion more colonial of Nicaragua. Halfway through this route, shortly before reaching the city of the same name, Masaya, the entrance to the national park appears, glimpsing in the background a huge volcano under a small cloud with sulfur remains.

Masaya Volcano

Masaya volcano

Once you pay the entrance to the park you drive a path of ancient eruptions with huge volcanic rocks, where a few kilometers later you reach the volcano parking, a place where you perceive a unpleasant smell of sulfur. Next to the parking lot, in addition to the surveillance post and a bus stop, there are stairs that go up to see the bottom of the crater. In this viewpoint, with incredible views, the park guards advise not to be more than 15min, since you run the risk of getting intoxicated by the smoke that the volcano emits, and the truth, after 10 minutes you want to continue seeing the crater…

Masaya Volcano

Just to the left of the main crater is another smaller one covered by vegetation, where it is possible to see the odd beauty, to say something, with a pair of claws and wings, called buzzards. From here it is possible to take a walk without hardly perceiving the smell of the neighboring crater, which comes in handy after a sulfur packing.
