Maybe for many Mogarraz Be the prettiest town in the Sierra de Francia, without underestimating that there are many jewels in this place in the province of Salamanca as the swimming pool. A region where you can enjoy or not the twisted roads that populate it, all surrounded by soft mountains and deep forests where it is easy to cross with wild boars or deer at dusk.

Mogarraz A different people than usual

A little bit of history

Like so many other villages in the Sierra de Francia, Mogarraz was built after the restocking process that the area had in the 12th century. Initially it belonged to the alfoz of Miranda de Castañar but after the creation of the current provinces, it was included in Salamanca and belonging to the Leonese region which is composed of León, Zamora and Salamanca.

Visit to Mogarraz

Maybe Mogarraz don't be as visited as the swimming pool but it is a place that little has to be envied by keeping many attractions and many of them rare. We used it as a "pass field" to visit the entire region and it was a great success. A cozy town, very quiet and with several restaurants that eat great.

Perhaps as in so many other groups of friends that have not been seen for a long time, we chose the Pool and its surroundings as a place to meet again during a weekend. After a few hours on the road from different parts of the center of the country, we arrived at Mogarraz on a Friday night, after spending the last 45 minutes struggling on extremely narrow roads with many curves.

Once in Mogarraz and as usual in many villages in the area, finding parking is not easy and many times you have to make use of parking lots that are located on the outskirts. In Mogarraz they do not exist and therefore without thinking twice we went into their narrow streets until we found the rural house that we had contracted with the luck that there were a couple of parking spaces near it and a few more in the main church.

That night there was no opportunity for much more deciding to take a short walk to later have dinner and drink some wine at a nearby bar before going to bed with the chickens :-D.

The next day we begin the visit to the town which we can see on a long walk of 2 hours at most. But of course, what was in Mogarraz that caught our attention so much ... Well, simply that in almost all the houses hung several paintings, 388 to be exact, made by a local painter in 1967 with the portraits of the people who lived in that house more than 40 years ago.

Mogarraz

Of course, the idea of painting all its citizens was not mandatory, but apparently the idea came out by needing a portrait to request ID and how they were so well left hanging on the facades. Until today, all these images are still on their walls, portraits of people of different ages and professions, with many military and religious among them.

As the portraits are from many years ago, most of their protagonists either moved to another place or have unfortunately passed away. Still we met one of its protagonists who happened to be one of those soldiers, who was doing the military at this precise moment.

The rest of the town has a great resemblance to its neighboring towns, with a type of construction that we liked a lot but with a substantial difference that no town we had seen before had.
