Make the route to Snowdon is to climb the highest peak of Wales, in the snowdonia national park. A region of steep peaks and hundreds of lakes, very similar to the Scottish highlands. With its more than 1000 meters high and its proximity to the sea, the slopes are strong but its accesses are good, making this route affordable for most audiences.

Route to Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales

Something intrinsic in the mountaineer is trying to climb high mountains, the higher the better. This may make us think that climbing mountains lower than any medium Spanish mountain pass is absurd, but nothing is further from reality. Below 2000/2500 meters the sensation of height is practically not noticeable, but it is true that the speed of progression between a mountain of 1000 meters and another of 3000 meters is very different. Even so and forgetting this aspect, in the relatively mountainous, a mountain like the Snowdon of 1085 meters has nothing to envy to many summits of Gredos or the Pyrenees.

Snowdon is a respectable mountain in winter, especially on his face East, and the landscapes that surround it are completely alpine without missing the large lakes. However, there is an important drawback that could throw us back and that is that you can get on the train ... How do you train? On one of its faces, the simplest and least graceful, runs a narrow train track that goes up from Llanberis to the top of Snowdon. Reaching its top is very easy and we will always meet people. In our favor is that the main route runs through a very different face, oblivious to human follies and that I personally recommend doing. Moreover, the train and its scars are not seen until 30 meters before crowning the top.

Snowdon ascent

The main route to the Snowdon part of the port of Pen-and-pass, at a meteoric height (to be Wales) of 377 meters. A parking lot not very large is the reference point, right in front of a Youth Hostel. The parking is paid and is paid for cycles of 4 hours with a cost of 5 pounds. If you are fast it is not very expensive, if you take it easy the thing will no longer be so funny.

Leaving the parking lot, just down the road where there is a sign that marks the route (Miner's track), we will continue along a wide path in very good condition. This will reach a first lake, the lake Llyn teyrn, raffling it about 40 meters above and without touching its shore at any time.

From here the route becomes a bit flat, with hardly any climbs and so on until you reach the largest lake on the route, the lake Llyn Llydaw. There are certain buildings in ruins, signs of the old mines that were in the area.

Lake Llyn Llydaw will cross it over a stone bridge and begin to cross it on its right flank until almost the end. Right there is when we will begin a steep climb on a cobbled road after leaving the comfortable ground past some abandoned old mines.

Here we will begin to see the first laggards, but the British feeling is to never give up, whatever happens ..., which we saw years ago in the Ben Nevis, the highest peak in Scotland and Great Britain. People even if it costs a hell to climb, do not carry the right material, make horrible weather or whatever, will go up if or if.

After the first respectable ramp we will reach the third and last lake, the lakeGlaslyn, right at the foot of the Snowdon and a vertical wall of almost 500 meters. From here we will begin the most powerful climb of the entire route.

10 minutes after heading up the climb we will cross with the walkers who come by the Pyg Track The road becomes a bit wild and it is hard to follow the path. Partly destroyed by the winter snowfall and on other occasions by its numerous bifurcations created by crazy walkers. It is right there when I hear but I still don't see the whistle of a train behind the mountain.

As we climb the harder levels, we leave behind the beautiful lakes. Moments that are useful for making a short stop, taking a picture and following our path. So during the 45 minutes / 1h it takes to climb the ramp.

After reaching the top, just 50 meters from the end we will see the civilization. A narrow train track with its small stop. A place where hundreds of tourists who want to be on the highest peak of Wales get off without walking just a few steps. Which I do not understand. There are ski resorts nearby that offer similar things, so why destroy more mountains?

Opinions aside, the last 50 meters are simple and one already walks relaxed knowing that taking the summit will be very simple. Already I only separated a few steps to climb to the final milestone and take the picture on duty. We have climbed to highest peak of wales after making the route to Snowdon.

Too bad we have the car in Pen-y-Pass. We have no choice but to return along the same path we had traveled. Anyway there was an option B that we did not prove that it also ended up in the parking lot and was taking the path of the Pig Track. Maybe next time.

Practical data

When to go?

Snowdonia is covered with snow from 500 meters or even below during winter. It is at the end of April when it is recommended to start climbing the Snowdon although surely we will find numerous snowfields and areas where it is possible to have to use crampons. As of June, the snow disappears completely and that is when the climb becomes easier. In addition June and July are the least rainy months.

How to get?

The starting point is Pen-Y-Pass and usually you arrive by car. It is also reached by public transport by 1.50 pounds, through the service Snowdon sherpa that communicates the locations of Llanberis and Betws-y-coed.

What to wear

Usually the route is cool and it is very easy to rain. Therefore we must wear a layer of water and some warm clothes. Let's not forget to bring water, even if we see a lot of lake and streams.

Winter

In winter the snow is camping at ease and therefore the conditions and temperature is only for experts in high mountains.

  • Long pants, thermal shirt (one pair) and fleece
  • Cap and gloves (would wear at least 2 pairs of gloves)
  • Thermal blanket
  • Primaloft, it's very cold in winter
  • Raincoat or third layer for wind or rain
  • High boots and winter socks
  • Crampons and ice ax, the top is usually icy and icy
  • Flashlight or frontal. The Black Diamond for example are excellent
  • Leggings. Here is a good example of leggings and eye with size
  • Backpack of at least 3ol
  • Trekking sticks
  • Map/GPS. Without this, don't even show up. As GPS our recommendation is the Garmin GPSMAP 64
  • Meal for two days

Summer

In summer the ascent is very different. From our experience we recommend to take at least:

  • Summer slippers, boots preferably
  • Shorts and short sleeve t-shirt
  • Polar fleece, since in the shade it is cold
  • Cap and polarized sunglasses
  • Solar protection
  • Water in quantity and food

Where to sleep?

On the way we have no shelter. Perhaps it is best to sleep in the Youth Hostel next to the parking lot of Pen-Y-Pass he YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass.
