The Ascension to the Reventón from the Farm is one of the most picturesque routes of the Sierra de Guadarrama. In it you can see a town as monumental as La Granja from above, the Big jet, one of the waterfalls highest in the Sierra de Guadarrama, and the historic Valsaín pine forests. All in it on the north face, just 20 minutes from Segovia and just over an hour from Madrid.

Route from La Granja to Reventón

Ascent to Reventón from La Granja

The Ascension to the Reventón from La Granja is a circular route of just over 14km. It is not a very demanding route, although the unevenness that must be covered to overcome the Great Jet leaves more than one breathless. We would say that it is a route of medium difficulty, without too many demands, but like everything, it depends on your state of form. We tell you the route and see if you are encouraged to do it, although with the video you can already get an idea.

Ascension to the Reventón from the Farm

We start the route from the street, Path of the King's Chair, near one of the walls of the La Granja Gardens. In the middle of this street there is a small fence that separates the urbanization of a forest that delights lovers of such beautiful times as autumn, by the mixture of colors that emanate from the thick vegetation.

Next to the Peña Berrueco Stream

The road next to Peña Berrueco stream it crosses this beautiful forest through which you can access the Great Jet, a 60m water jump where many climbers challenge the granite surface of the place. This waterfall, which we have visited several times, changes a lot depending on the time of year. It can go from being a squirt to a large waterfall, being the best time spring or winter.

Many hikers finish the route on the jet itself, as it is a beautiful walk and also very pleasant, but those who are always looking for more adventure a peak like the Reventón, which houses this small waterfall, can not be left behind.

Route from La Granja to Reventón

Once in the Big Jet to ascend to the Reventón you have to get around it for aa path to the left, a very vertical path that should go up slowly so as not to deplete the forces. As you ascend, you will see both Segovia and La Granja, gradually accessing the pine forests that Valsaín protects. If you like history, take note, because in this area Felipe II killed the last bear of Guadarrama, and not only that, the kingHenry IV of Castile He came to organize safaris with lions that he brought from Africa, something that seems sub-realistic today.

Big jet
Big jet

Already passed in Chorro Grande the views are exceptional. From this moment, a large part of the stage takes place next to the stream that feeds the Great Jet without too much unevenness. Normally you always have to go along the path that goes in right parallel, but there will come a time that will have to be crossed to attack the top of the Reventón.

Ascension to the Reventón

Except for the initial section and the upper part of El Chorro, where there is the classic Guadarrama pine, there are hardly any trees on the route. In winter it is spectacular, since being north face you see large “intact” meadows practically snowed.

Arriving at the top you can see traces of the Civil war, like parapets and small fortifications, remains of the famous Battle of the Reventón, where 30 soldiers were surprised by the 75th Victory Regiment that rose quietly with their horses along this north face.

Route from La Granja to Reventón

From this point the ascent to the Reventón is by a soft crest where you can already see in the background the landmark of the top, at almost 2,100m, where the wind encamps at ease and in which it is necessary to shelter.

Route from La Granja to Reventón

Already the descent passes through a small path next to a fence on the left, until you reach the Infant Fountain. From there a wide road where farmers or ranchers climb in 4 × 4. It has no loss, since the first path is not far from the top of the Reventón.

How to get?

From Segovia you can get from the CL-601 to the Farm. Once there take the detour that goes to the Parador and once past this, go up the street that ascends in the direction of the north face. That street after a while will gradually leave a wall to the right that overlooks the gardens of the Farm. At the end of this road you will reach an urbanization, enter it until you reach the fence where the route begins.

Seasonal tips

Winter

Although we made the route in autumn in winter the snow encamps freely in winter. Therefore, both for the cold and for the temperature conditions that you can find here we recommend you take the following material:

  • Long pants, thermal shirt and fleece
  • Hat and gloves
  • Primaloft if you are cold
  • Raincoat or third layer for wind or rain
  • Long boots and winter socks
  • Crampons and ice ax, the top may be frozen

In winter the routes are usually longer if there is snow, so calculate 1 or 2h more.

Summer

In summer this point of the mountains is usually very dry and very hot. There are hardly any shadows, since except for some large rock there are few shady areas. For the material we recommend:

  • Summer shoes, short if possible
  • Shorts and short sleeve t-shirt
  • Polarized sunglasses and cap
  • Solar protection
  • Water in quantity and food, which will be 5 hours of crossing
